Shibuya Sky: The Best View in Tokyo, If You Book It Right

Tokyo has many observation decks, but only one of them makes almost everyone go quiet for a moment when they step outside. Shibuya Sky is the open-air rooftop of the Shibuya Scramble Square tower, 229 meters directly above the famous crossing. There is no glass between you and the city — only sky, wind, and Tokyo spreading to the horizon.

It is my favorite view in the city. But it needs a small amount of planning, so please allow me to explain.

What Makes It Special

• It is truly open-air. Most Tokyo decks are indoor viewing floors. Here you stand on the roof itself.
• The scramble crossing is directly below — the little crowds crossing look like a moving pattern.
• On clear days you can see Mount Fuji, especially in winter.
• In one corner there is a net hammock area where you can lie down and look straight up at the sky. Children love it, and so do adults, quietly.

The Most Important Advice: Book Ahead

Tickets are timed entry, and the sunset slots sell out several days in advance — sometimes a week ahead in busy seasons. Please book online as soon as your travel dates are fixed.

• Online tickets are around ¥2,500–2,700 for adults (slightly more at the door, when available)
• If sunset is sold out, the night slots are also beautiful — the city turns into a field of lights
• Winter has the clearest air and the best chance of Mount Fuji

Good to Know Before You Go

• The rooftop closes in rain or strong wind (you are moved to the indoor floor instead)
• Tripods and loose items are not allowed on the roof; small bags go into free lockers
• Photos are welcome, but please hold your phone firmly — it is genuinely windy up there
• A café and a bar area are available; a drink at dusk up there is a small, memorable luxury

Getting There

Shibuya Sky is inside Shibuya Scramble Square, the tall tower directly connected to Shibuya Station. The ticket counter and entrance are on the 14th floor.

In the Building: Food, Lockers, and Toilets

Shibuya Sky sits at the top of Shibuya Scramble Square, so it is easy to spend a whole afternoon or evening here.

Where to eat (12th–13th floors). The restaurant floors, called FOODIES SCRAMBLE, bring together many kinds of Japanese food. On the 12th floor there is sushi (Sushi Matsue), kushiage deep-fried skewers (Kushi-no-Bo), soba (Hanwarai), and monjayaki (Moheji). On the 13th floor you will find tempura (Tentora), udon (Tsurutontan), and okonomiyaki (Okonomi Tamachan). Having an early dinner here and then going up for the sunset is a lovely plan.

Lockers. Before you step onto the open-air rooftop, you must store your loose belongings. Shibuya Sky provides ¥100 coin-return lockers — you get the coin back afterwards — and you may take things in and out along the way. Please note that the building has no lockers large enough for suitcases; if you are carrying big luggage, the coin lockers at Shibuya Station nearby are the better choice.

Toilets. There are toilets on the indoor observation floor (46th) and on the restaurant floors. The open-air rooftop itself has none, so it is wise to go before you head up.
