teamLab Planets Tokyo: A First-Visit Guide
There are museums you look at, and there are museums you walk into. teamLab Planets in Toyosu is firmly the second kind: you take off your shoes, roll up your trousers, and walk barefoot through water, light, and mirrors while the art responds to your movement.
It has become one of the most popular attractions in Tokyo for overseas visitors, and I understand why. But a first visit goes much better with a little preparation, so please allow me to share what I wish everyone knew in advance.
What It Is
teamLab Planets is an immersive digital art museum. You move through a series of large spaces — a waterfall you climb toward, a knee-deep pool where digital koi swim around your legs, an infinite garden of floating orchids, a mirrored room filled with endless light.
A visit takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. It is enjoyable for adults and children equally, which is not something I can say about many art spaces.
How to Prepare (Please Read This Part)
- Book a timed ticket online, in advance. Tickets regularly sell out, especially on weekends and holidays. Same-day entry is often impossible.
- You will walk barefoot the whole time. Lockers for shoes and socks are provided.
- One area has knee-deep water. Shorts are ideal; trousers can be rolled up. Rental shorts are available if needed.
- Please avoid short skirts. Some floors are mirrored — this is not a small detail.
- Tickets for adults are roughly ¥3,800–4,800 depending on the date (please check the official site for current prices)

When to Go
The quietest times are weekday mornings (the first slot) and weekday evenings. Photos also turn out better when the rooms are less crowded. If your schedule allows, I recommend the first slot of a weekday morning, followed by a late sushi breakfast nearby.
Getting There
teamLab Planets is a 1-minute walk from Shin-Toyosu Station on the Yurikamome Line, or about 10 minutes on foot from Toyosu Station (Yurakucho Line).
Pair It with Toyosu Market
The famous Toyosu Market — the successor of Tsukiji’s inner market — is one station away. A sushi breakfast at the market, followed by a morning slot at teamLab Planets, makes one of the best half-days in Tokyo.
